Her mobile phone burst to life in her purse just as she let herself into her shoe-box size apartment.

“Oh my God!” Glen squealed into her ear, loud enough that Bebe winced. “You and Dr. McHot-Stuff are doing it?”

  Oh fuzzbucket.

Hand still on the doorknob, Bebe scrunched up her face. “Dr Who?”

“Dr Murphy. You and Dr. Murphy! Lyndal saw you two kissing outside of the Barracks Cafe ten minutes ago.”

  Fuzz. Freaking. Bucket.

  “Who?”

“Lyndal Pegg. She’s one of the nurses in—It doesn’t matter! You and Dr. Murphy are a thing.” Once again, Glen’s voice hit wincing levels. “How long? Since when? Does he fuck as good as he looks? Oh my God, I need details. Tell me details now!”

Head roaring, feeling like she’d been stuffed into a safe full of cotton wool, Bebe closed her door and crossed to the closest armchair. “I’m not having sex with Dr. Murphy. I don’t know who Linda thinks she saw kissing him—”

  “Lyndal.”

“But it wasn’t me. Tell Lyndal to get her eyes checked.”

Glen laughed. “Girl, you’re full of shit. I saw the way Murphy looked at you in the cafeteria the other night, like he wanted to spread you out and eat you like a PB&J. And I saw the way you got all blushy and tongue-tied when you were talking to him. And then you went to his office for some reason, and the talk around the place is you two made out in there. And this morning he asked me if you were on duty and looked wretched when I said you weren’t, so don’t tell me it wasn’t you on the footpath with him.”

  Well, crap.

Bebe dropped into the armchair like a lead balloon. “It wasn’t me with him on the footpath,” she said, except it sounded like she was talking through a bucket of sand.

  “Sure, okay.”

  No way Glen was convinced.

“Can you tell Lyndal to stop telling people it was me?” Lyndal. An image of a tall nurse with long red hair and killer cheekbones filled Bebe’s head. Ahhh, that’s who Lyndal was; the nurse who’d spent ages describing what she thought getting kissed by Erik would be like.

“I’ll tell her you said it wasn’t you,” Glen agreed. “Even though I don’t believe you.”

Bebe let out a sigh and slumped back into the chair. Holy crap, what did she do? What the hell did she do? “Why would someone like Dr. Murphy have anything to do with me, Glen?” Maybe she could reason with her. “I mean, seriously. You know what he looks like. And doesn’t he date all these tall, thin, gorgeous women all over Perth? You told me that, didn’t you?”

Glen had told Bebe that. Stupidly, Bebe had totally forgotten about it until now. And if Erik constantly dated tall, thin, gorgeous women, what the hell was he doing with her? Was she just his…frumpy phase?

  Crap. Again. Times a hundred.

Her stomach clenched, and she rubbed at her face. She felt sick. Scared, nervous, and sick. And confused. So freaking confused.

She’d had it all sorted out in her head after leaving the cafe: Erik would come to her after his dinner, they’d make love, and then tomorrow he’d tell her he wanted to see her again and again, and she’d say yes, and they’d make love some more, and then months later they’d let everyone know they were together, and then maybe he’d even ask her to—

  “Bebe?”

Goddamn it, Erik had spent the last six months dating stunning single woman after stunning single woman.

  What was the deal?

Perhaps this was just his M.O.? If she’d never gone into his office the night before last, if she’d never turned up at his door this afternoon, would they…would he…?

He swore he wouldn’t succumb. Then she unleashed her wild side…

Neurosurgeon Erik Murphy lives for his work, avoiding relationships at all costs. He’s learned to keep a tight leash on his lust, and never more so than with staff or co-workers. So when Nurse Bebe struts into his hospital, he considers her off-limits. But despite his iron control, just one look at her sexy curves and sassy attitude and Erik suspects he’s screwed…figuratively and literally.

Bebe Wells was the proverbial wild child, throwing herself headlong into life without regret. Only after deciding to try some adulting did she find her passion in nursing. But she’s barely settled into the more grown-up Bebe when she sees Dr. Delectable her first day on the job. She vows not to backslide into her old self and ride the man like a new birthday pony. Until fate intervenes…and who’s she to argue with fate?

He’s spent his life living by rules. She’s spent her life breaking them. The choice is simple: deny the combustible chemistry between them…or surrender to their true selves.

  Dedication

  Chapter 1

Walking in on the Head of Neurosurgery while he was getting a blow job in the specialists’ private lounge wasn’t the way to keep your new job.

At least, Bebe thought Dr. Erik Murphy was getting a blow job. It sure as hell looked like the hot Irish surgeon was getting a blow job. What else was one meant to think at the sight of a platinum-blonde woman on her knees between his spread, muscular thighs as he slouched in one of the leather armchairs, eyes closed, head resting on the back cushion?

Surely anyone who walked in on a sight like that would think blow job, right?

Bebe hadn’t stuck around to ask. Unfortunately, what she had done was let out a stunned gasp a split second before spinning around to bolt from the lounge. Of course, because fate had a twisted sense of humour, she’d collided with the doorframe—ooffing so loudly, everyone in the hallway looked at her—and then bounced into the other side of the doorframe, hitting her hip so hard she’d let out an equally loud “shit!”

If Dr. Murphy hadn’t noticed her when she’d walked in, he sure as hell would have noticed her running out.

Which was problematic to the extreme, because Dr. Erik Murphy was not one to irritate. He was notorious for demanding only exemplary behaviour from those who worked with him, or even those who worked near him. She’d heard he’d once reprimanded an intern for wearing a shirt a shade of green he found displeasing. Reduced the poor guy to
tears, apparently.

Chewing on the inside of her mouth, Bebe pinched her thumbnail and fidgeted on the plastic cafeteria seat. An hour had passed since she’d walked in on Murphy. Sixty minutes of sheer psychological torture.

What were the chances being busted getting a blow job in the specialists’ private lounge was more irritating to him than a green shirt?

  “Bebe?”

Damn it, she needed this job. Treading water in an angry ocean of student debt wasn’t fun, and she couldn’t bring herself to ask her big brother—her only living relative—for help, no matter how tired her legs were getting. Lincoln was dealing with his own life—or rather, the fall-out from his very dangerous previous occupation—and the last thing she wanted was to pile more stress on top of him.

Which was why she hadn’t mentioned a word about her tight financial situation to Niki, either. When your best friend was also your brother’s significant other, you had to pick and choose what you told her.

If only she’d knocked on the door first before going inside. The doctor she’d been sent to deliver a message to hadn’t even been in there.

Still, couldn’t Murphy have kept his libido in check until he was no longer on the premises? Seriously, what kind of moron had oral sex in the middle of the night?

“Bebe, are you listening to me?”

Okay, so that was probably when most people had oral sex, but not in the work environment. Clearly Dr. Murphy didn’t think the normal conventions of society applied to him. Why would he? He was incredibly successful and incredibly sexy, and in Bebe’s experience, incredibly successful, incredibly sexy people didn’t behave like normal people.

Incredibly sexy is an understatement. Freaking make-your-ovaries-explode sexy, more like it.

True. Dr. Murphy had been her go-to sexual fantasy since she’d seen him striding through the staff cafeteria on her second day at Central Perth. She’d even done the whole throws-her-against-the-wall-and-ravishes-her-while-everyone-watches—

“For the love of God, Bebe. I’m talking to you!”

Something hard nudged her foot under the cafeteria table, and she startled. “What?”

The woman sitting opposite her frowned. “What’s going on? You look flustered.”

  Ha. Another understatement.

Of all the other nurses there, Glen Wilcox was the only one with whom Bebe liked to share her break. Also a first-year nurse, Glen didn’t seem to mind that Bebe spent most of their lunchtime eating instead of talking. If the long break in the middle of the night shift could be called “lunch,” that was. Bebe hadn’t eaten lunch in the middle of the day for six weeks now. At the end of this week, she would be back on day shift. How weird was it going to be eating when she was normally sound asleep?

  “Well?” Glen raised her eyebrows.

Glen was nice but, as with most people, Bebe kept her at arm’s length. When your parents died at a young age and your brother worked for a secret government agency, you tended to put up emotional barriers. It was easier to keep people out than explain why you couldn’t let them in. Niki was the only one Bebe had ever truly let into her life, and that was because Niki had been her bestie before her parents died, and before Lincoln became…whatever Lincoln was.

“Earth to Bebe.” Glen kicked her under the table again.

  “Ow! Stop kicking me.”

“Then stop zoning out. You’re gnawing on your thumbnail like crazy when you’ve got a perfectly good sandwich in front of you.” Glen gave Bebe’s untouched BLT a pointed look. “I need answers for this bizarre behaviour.”

  I busted Dr. Murphy mid-fellatio.

Yeah, she totally couldn’t say that.

Trying for nonchalance, she shrugged. “I’m not hungry?”

  Glen laughed. “Sure.”

Tall, slim, and achingly pretty and smart, Glen breezed through the day, making nursing look easy. The complete antithesis of Bebe, although when it came to medical knowledge, Bebe ran rings around Glen, a fact Glen happily admitted almost weekly.

Bebe knew her stuff. Why her career counsellor hadn’t suggested nursing way back in high school was still a mystery. The pervy old bastard had been too busy trying to see down her uniform neckline.

And telling her she needed to stay as far away from Nikalene Macintosh as possible.

Ha. He’d almost had a stroke when she and Niki made out in front of him at one of the school dances, for no other reason than to see what he would do. He’d left the dance before the end of the night and wouldn’t make eye contact with either of them in the halls for weeks.

Oh man, she really did stir the shit back then. Another reason not to lose her job now; it kept that wild, rebellious side of her under check. Somewhat.

The Bebe of old wasn’t allowed out to play anymore. The Bebe of old would have cleared her throat in the specialists’ lounge and asked Dr. Murphy if he was having a swell time, and Bebe would now be packing up her locker.

She liked having a locker. She liked being a nurse. After years of flouncing about trying to discover who she really was, rebelling against “the shackles of corporate greed and injustice” at numerous protest rallies, and generally being a wild child…now she knew. Being a nurse fulfilled something in her she hadn’t realised was missing until now, and she was proud of the fact she was good at it. She was one of the best of the new nurses at Perth Central, which made tempering her old self worth it. She’d clamped down that wild side of hers so much she was almost an introvert.

“Hey-ho.” Glen kicked Bebe under the table again, her attention now aimed over Bebe’s shoulder. “Look who’s just walked in.”

  Bebe stiffened. “Who?”

“Oh wow, he’s looking this way,” Glen whispered, trailing her fingers up and down the open collar of her scrubs shirt, her smile wide. “He’s walking towards us. He’s actually walking towards us!”

Swallowing, Bebe straightened in her seat, stare locked on Glen’s face. “Who’s walking towards us?”

He’s found you. You know that, right? He’s found—

“Hi, Doctor,” Glen almost breathed, leaning forward a little as she gazed up at the new arrival. “Is there anything I can do for you?”

  Yep. He’s found you.

The hot, prickling sensation on the side of her face told Bebe someone stood beside their table, studying her.

Well, better get it over and done with. Like a Band-Aid. One, two…

Turning in her seat, she looked up at the impossibly sexy Head of Neurosurgery waiting for her to acknowledge his presence.

  “Fuzzbucket,” she whispered

Doctor Murphy’s artic-blue eyes locked with hers. His square jaw bunched. His dark brown hair hung over his darker eyebrows in a tousled mess, and for a split-second, Bebe wondered if its state was due to his hands or the blonde who’d been between his spread legs.

“Nurse Wells,” he said. As always, his slight Irish accent made her undies wet. Damn it, he had no right sounding so sexy. “I’ve been wanting to talk to you for the last hour. Please find yourself in my office in fifteen minutes.”

Bebe’s stomach turned to a lead ball. A twisting, churning, heavy lead ball.

“No need to knock. I’ll be expecting you.” Something very close to a smirk played with the corner of his mouth and an enigmatic light gleamed in his eyes when he said, “This time.”

Well, there goes her life at Central Perth. Goddamn it, what were the chances he’d let her beg for a good reference?

Maybe offer him a blow job?

An image instantly filled her head: Bebe kneeling between his spread thighs, her fingers wrapped around an erection of such girth and length, only an imagination could create it.

Heat flooded her face, even as fresh liquid tension flooded her pussy. Oh God, how was it possible to be both turned on and embarrassed at the same time?

And Murphy stood right there, witnessing it all. Okay, probably not the wet underpants part, although if he were to look at her nipples at that ver
y second, there’s no way he’d be able to miss how hard and pointed they were beneath her scrubs.

She sucked in a shaky breath, causing her boobs to heave. Crap, now she was a cliché. A horny, about-to-lose-her-job cliché. “I’m back on shift in fifteen minutes,” she said, although the words sounded more like strangled croaks.

Glen kicked her foot under the table again.

Why? What did she want her to do? Glen didn’t know she’d busted the good doctor on the verge of getting blown. Nor did Glen know Bebe fantasized way too often about Murphy doing wicked things to her that no born-again good girl should fantasize. What exactly did Glen think was going to happen in his office if Bebe went?

Again—and as quickly as the last—another insanely vivid image of her and Dr. Murphy flashed through Bebe’s head. This time, however, it was Murphy on his knees, his long-fingered hands pressed high to her bare inner thighs, holding them wide as he drew his head closer to their junction and he swiped his tongue oh so slowly up her—

“I can cover for you,” Glen said, smile full of knowing innuendo. You lucky girl, that smile said. I want details. “Don’t sweat it, Bebe.”

Bebe bit back a groan, and not just because her clit was throbbing with a need for a tongue that would never be anywhere near it.

Awesome. She was horny and scared and had no recourse now but to go to Murphy’s office.

Hell. Maybe she really did need to seriously consider the notion of offering him a BJ to keep her job. What was the worst that could happen? He’d fire her?

The odds were likely that’s exactly what was about to happen anyway.

  Fuzzbucket, she was so screwed.

  * * * *

She’d been in his head for too fecking long.

He’d promised himself when he’d first graduated from med school and became a surgeon over a decade ago, he’d never have a personal relationship with a nurse or any other staff member of any hospital he worked in. His father—a revered brain surgeon and narcissistic bastard—slept his way through so many nurses right under his mother’s nose it was sickening. Erik swore never to be like him. To keep his work life separate from his social life. His sexual life.
